The publisher (CABI) of my edited book Climate
Change and Global Health has advised I should not give away too much on
the blog. So, I’d better stop here. I will say that one chapter (which I’ve
written though it needs updating) is about how those on the top deck, and their
lackeys on the second deck (including a lot of economists and other academics,
but also some feminists and the Catholic church) have collectively conspired to
keep the 3rd and 4th decks extremely crowded.
This has
unfolded due to too much stated faith that ingenuity would not only solve the
problems of the whole ship but create development below decks. In fact, I will
show, a more accurate interpretation of the motivation of these elites was to
try to maintain low wages – a surplus or reserve army of the poor, which by the
way also hindered development in the South.
Development in the Third World is most
advanced where fertility has fallen, though causation is bi-directional, eg
Thailand, China, even Latin America, even Bangladesh is getting ahead of India
and well ahead of Pakistan. Will the Human Titanic strike the iceberg? Time
will tell.
But if you’ve read this far I'm sure you, too, sense the risk, such as conflict over water resources along the Nile, or in a myriad of other forms.
